During 2012 UNIMORE reorganized its teaching and research structures based on the indications of the Gelmini Law. The new organizational structures called Departments have been activated and an interdepartmental coordination structure has been activated, called the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery which coordinates the teaching activities of the Medical Area Departments. Teaching has its heart in the Educational Services Center. Located at the Modena University Hospital, it represents a point of excellence for the University for its technological equipment and for the variety of services that can be made available. However, teaching also develops in hospital wards, venues for training which finds one of its most important moments in clinical practice. in fact, it is the large number of students in the research laboratories of the various departments that gives a sign of the integration between the moment of treatment and the moment of research aimed at discovering the therapies of tomorrow. Within the Faculty, teaching, assistance and research accompany future graduates throughout their university and professional life.
Research topics
Research, as well as teaching, is developed in three Medical Area Departments:
Department of Surgical, Medical, Dental and Morphological Sciences with Interest in Transplantology, Oncology and Regenerative Medicine (CHIMOMO)
CHIMOMO operates in various sectors of basic and clinical scientific research, paying particular attention to advanced surgery, the study of the role of stem cells in regenerative medicine, oncology, odontostomatological and infectious, inflammatory or autoimmune-based diseases.
Department of Medical-Surgical, Maternal-Child and Adult Sciences (SMECHIMAI)
SMECHIMAI includes teachers belonging to at least 20 scientific-disciplinary sectors. The Department has precisely defined its strategy for research capable of enhancing the skills of the groups present, thanks also to interdepartmental collaborations with Italian and foreign research centres. The objectives are developed in multi-year projects, in particular: study of the molecular basis and pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases; implementation of molecular, genetic, immunological and imaging diagnostic programs; development of innovative therapies based on cell and gene therapy techniques, robotic surgery, video thoracoscopic surgery, cutting-edge surgical-microsurgical, orthopedic and plastic-reconstructive procedures; development of research based on innovation and clinical and industrial transferability. The research activity makes use of numerous research laboratories equipped with cutting-edge equipment.
SMECHIMAI was the winner of the MUR-Departments of Excellence 2023-2027 tender.
